Otto Bihler is one of the world’s leading company in the supply of forming, assembly and welding
technologies as well as specialized CAD software for punching technology. The company’s network supports
two primary sites - headquarters and the production plant - connected by a single 2 Mbps leased line. To
complicate matters, a large mountain is located directly between those two facilities.Recently, both parts of the company established a new, three-dimensional CAD-System for construction. The database is required to be centrally managed by a server farm which is located at the production plant. To guarantee a highly secure and high-speed data transmission, leased lines with a minimum capacity of 100 Mbps were needed. The alternative solution to obtaining these leased lines was to turn to the Intelligent Bandwidth wireless infrastructure from MNI and SCALTEL. The technology for Otto Bihler The most compelling reason for Otto Bihler's decision to invest in a wireless solution was the enormous cost saving potential over leased lines. The overall high availability and performance as well as the transparent transport of data, voice and video completed the decision for the selection of MNI’s wireless solution. SCALTEL is the main distributor of MNI in Germany and is a certified partner for licensed wireless infrastructure with over eight years of experience and many highly satisfied customers. Using their knowledge of system solutions, the SCALTEL specialists decided to install two Proteus AMT links from Microwave Networks. As a result, Otto Bihler has realized all its technical objectives for the transfer of 100 Mbps along with with a dramatic return-on-investment of less than one year. The Installation One of the challenges of this project was the lack of line-of-sight between the two company locations. As a result,
SCALTEL had to find a suitable relay point for the two point-to-point links. This relay point was none other than
“Tegelberg” mountain, a very popular tourist attraction. SCALTEL specialists were restricted by the mountain's cableway
and were required to install the antennas near it's upper station. However, this was not a difficult constraint and
the project was accomplished without any problems, on time, and within budget. The system has now been in operation since 2005 and continues to work as expected. Otto Bihler remains very happy with the solution designed by both SCALTEL and MNI. SCALTEL is also responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the system at their own Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC).
